ETHN 3120: CHICANO/A/XS IN THE UNITES STATES – FALL 2023
TITLE:
A Celebration Of Spain In Dance And Music
MEET THE DOCUMENT:
This large printed flyer with a nice purple background is meant to catch passersby’s eyes and draw them in. It features prominently two dancers, one in a beautiful flamenco dress and one in a suit, in the middle of a dip. Right next to these two dancers are their names in big, bold letters meant to showcase the lead performers, Olivero Pascual and Angela del Moral. Below are the titles of this performance: “A Celebration of Spain in Dance and Music.” At the bottom of the flyer, against a white background, is all the relevant information about the performance, including the date, time, venue, and ticket prices. Short paragraphs about the lead performers and their education and work experience are on the other side of this flyer. There is also a paragraph about the performance, including previous responses to this event, and c, critic reviews. But the most appealing aspect of this side of the flyer is the three different pictures taken from the performance at past venues meant to draw people in even more.
OBSERVE ITS PARTS:
This flyer was meant for the general public in Columbus and the surrounding areas to gather more people to see this dance performance. This flyer is from 1980 and is intended to advertise a dance performance on April 10th. The Kolmar wrote it- Luth Entertainment Inc. as a way to increase knowledge of this performance and as a way to diversify entertainment by celebrating so many varying styles of dance.
TRY TO MAKE SENSE OF IT:
This is a flyer for a touring dance company starring Pascual Olivero and Angela del Moral. This specific performance is about celebrating the different dance forms throughout Spain, such as classical dances, folk dances, and flamenco. On the front of this flyer is a picture of Olivero and del Moral dancing, and on the back of the brochure, there is more in-depth information about these two lead dancers. Another prominent feature of the flyer is the venue, which is Mershon Auditorium in Columbus, Ohio, and the performance date is April 10th, 1980. Not only is all this pertinent information on the front of the flyer, but it also includes ticket prices listed as $3-$5 and the number to call to buy the tickets. And if all this wasn’t enough to convince you to buy a ticket and attend this performance, they also included critical reviews of Olivero and del Moral’s work.
USE IT AS HISTORICAL EVIDENCE:
There are many different aspects to this flyer that I don’t believe I would have found elsewhere. First and foremost, I found the backgrounds of the lead dancers particularly informative. It humanized these celebrities and brought to mind all the extensive training and education these performers must have had to eventually become the best in their field, not to mention their specific connections to Spain, such as how Pascual visited Spain to train under the best of the best. Del Moral was a previous first soloist at the National Spanish Dance Company. Other documents and helpful historical evidence to better understand this would be reviews of this performance within the different newspapers of Columbus and the surrounding areas. It would also be interesting to see where this company went after this tour and if they’ve only gotten bigger and better from there.
